About this Resource:

The Challenge:

Providing Valuable Continuing Education Opportunities to Alumni

At Western Governors University (WGU), an online university known for serving underrepresented students, support doesn’t end at degree completion. The Alumni Relations Team purposefully engages with its growing alumni base to deliver an experience that continues their journey after graduation.

“We do this by providing continuing education opportunities and learning resources to graduates that enables them to consistently upskill, ensuring they connect to opportunity and lead in high-demand workforce areas,” said Beau Jones, WGU Alumni Community Manager.

The Solution:

edX’s Catalog Offers the Right Upskilling Opportunities

Through edX Online Campus Essentials, WGU provides their alumni with free, unlimited access to 150+ courses mapped to 10 essential subject areas, including 50+ Spanish-language courses. The depth and breadth of the content and educational opportunities offered by edX was impressive when compared to other learning resources they have utilized, allowing WGU to help alumni upskill in a variety of in-demand subject areas. In addition, the administrative tools and data analytics made it easy for WGU to understand what content their graduates are engaging with and their progress to successful course completion.

The Results:

Over 1,200 Alumni Have Registered to Date for edX Courses Through Online Campus

At WGU, success is defined as changing lives for the better by creating pathways to opportunity. edX is supporting this mission by providing learning resources that alumni can use to reskill and upskill in areas that are in high demand in the workforce. In just a few short months, more than 1,200 WGU alumni have registered to use edX Online Campus. They’ve taken an average of two courses per person and explored 90 different topics, including Python, Six Sigma, and Cloud Computing, as well as effective leadership, people skills, and communications.
