The Challenge:

With School Shuttered, IIT Bombay Sought to Allow Students to Keep Learning

Like many universities, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) needed to make a quick shift from in-person classes to online classes in order to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. As the most prestigious university in India, stop-gap, emergency approaches to remote teaching were not ideal. It was important to IIT Bombay to keep its high standards in teaching and learning and be able to offer a large pool of courses from diverse fields.

The Solution:

edX Diverse Catalog and Extensive Partnerships Are a Perfect Fit

By using edX Online Campus, IIT Bombay was able to gain access to quality courses in a wide array of topics that it could offer to its students during the extended lockdown period. Since edX partners are recognized as leaders in higher ed, including 18 of the top 20 institutions according to the QS rankings, IIT Bombay felt confident that the quality of the courses offered would more than meet its standards.

“The students have actively participated and many of them have received verified certificates. We look forward to more enthusiastic engagement in the future.”

The Results:

IIT Bombay Sees Active Student and Staff Participation

IIT Bombay has provided students with free access to the edX Online Campus catalog, resulting in more than 3,000 enrollments in various courses. Students successfully completing a course or an edX program (a series of courses, such as Professional Certificate or MicroMasters® programs) received a verified certificate. This certificate affirms that they have acquired the learning outcomes associated with the course and can then be used by the university to determine course credit or with potential employers to demonstrate skill development and mastery. Among the many courses consumed, the subject areas of Healthcare, Management, Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence were especially sought after.

Administrative staff members also took advantage of the learning opportunity for professional development, exploring new topics and gaining additional knowledge and skills in their own areas of expertise, such as accounting, marketing, and leadership.

“This program has been more effective due to the participation of many partnering institutions across the globe offering a large pool of courses from diverse fields.”
